Music, Art, and Good Food at the Highland Center for the Arts

We’re not quite sure what the best part of the Highland Center for the Arts is between the music, breathtaking art, and mouthwatering food. Recently opened this past year, the HCA is just a short drive south (as in five minutes short) on the south end of Caspian Lake. Nestled amongst the lake’s rolling hills, the HCA features an art gallery, state-of-the-art performance theatre and seating for 250, and the tasty eatery, the Hardwick Street Café. Catch a show, peruse the fascinating works by local artists as you walk through the gallery halls, or stop at the cafe for a bite to eat.

In early June, the HCA is hosting Stephane Wrembel, a talented and creative Gypsy jazz guitar player described as “a revelation” by Rolling Stone magazine. Wrembel has headlined Lincoln Center, recorded with mandolin legend David Grisman, toured with master violinist Mark O’Connor and shared stages with Patti Smith and The Roots. He even has a guitar named after him. Get your tickets early for this show; it’s the first time that the HCA is imposing reserved seating! Stephane Wrembel will be performing on Saturday, June 9th at 6:30 PM at the Highland Center for the Arts Main Stage.

If you can catch it in time, viewing the exhibit Muse before it ends on May 28th is worth the rush to organize plans and makes the thrill of last-minute changes that much more exciting. The exhibit displays the work of three Vermont artists (Jess Polanshek, Kristin Richlan, and Amanda Weisenfeld) as they explore the spirituality of the magical realm of the forest and the traditional folklore associated with it.

With so much going on in the Northeast Kingdom’s music and arts scene, it’s no wonder you may have worked up an appetite. View the newly expanded lunch and dinner menus of the cafe which offers fresh, homemade baked goods, soups, salads, and locally-sourced, quality ingredients. Enjoy nachos with guacamole or savor the scrambled eggs and Cabot cheddar of a homemade crepe. Or order Northeast Kingdom style with North Country Bratwurst with potato wedges or a Maple Lawn Meatball with organic kettle chips.
